Fresh News! Back2zip v2.0 Beta Released

Back2zip v2.0, the online storage edition has been on the drawing board for years. Thousands of fans of Back2zip have been patiently waiting and now it's finally available in an initial beta release.

Frankly the big holdup has always been a scalable and secure storage infrastructure. With tens of thousands of Back2zip users, we needed to have an online storage infrastructure that could survive a heavy load and provide the best security.

The good news is that Amazon's S3 secure storage service provided exactly the infrastructure necessary to add online storage to Back2zip.

And Amazon S3 storage is not the only cool new feature. Back2zip is now a fully incremental backup tool (that is, only changes are stored so the backup archive is efficient.) Check this out:

Feel free to grab yourself a copy of Back2zip 2.0 now -- all we ask is that you share your feedback with us so we can rapidly improve the software. Enjoy!

Here's how it works:

Back2zip uses it's ZIP-64 engine to create a complete backup archive of your backup folders. Periodically Back2zip generates and archives changes you make or new files you add. All files and changes are stored locally in a ZIP-64 container and synchronized with your Amazon S3 (online storage) account.

A restore tree allows you to browse, search and restore any file or folder. If you accidentally delete or overwrite a file, that's OK. Back2zip stores every version so you can restore back to any previous version with a single click.

You can use the same account to backup up to 100 computers at home or at the office. The "Account Owner" can browse and restore any any files across all computers.

For example:

John Doe has four computers in his house: a desktop computer in his home office, two laptops and one netbook. He installs Back2zip on all four (using the same Amazon account) and can browse and fetch files from any of the comptuers to any other. If his laptop is ever stolen or destroyed he can fetch the entire contents with a couple clicks. John has thousands of work documents as well as a huge music collection which he values highly (since Napster is no longer free). His cost of backing up all four computers, thousands of documents and 1,650 Mp3 files? Six bucks! Amazon S3 is really cheap!

Jane Doe uses Back2zip to backup her entire small office (20 computers). She uses the default Back2zip profile which backs up the MyDocuments and Desktop folders. Whenever one of the computers crashes, she replaces the computer and uses Back2zip to fetch all the files to the new computer in minutes. As the account owner, she can also fetch any file from any computer on the network from her desk. The entire cost of backing up all the files on her entire office network? About $9.00. Amazon S3 is really inexpensive!
